Demonstrate commitment to saving energy on campus by signing the UMD Energy Pledge. Not only will you be helping to reduce environmental impacts, together we will save money on utility bills for our campus.
What is the Energy Pledge?
It is a list of 10 simple actions everyone can take to help reduce energy use on campus. Take the pledge online, and chose some (or ALL) of the simple everyday actions suggested, such as enabling energy-saving settings on computer. turning off lights when leaving a room, avoiding space heaters, and more.
Why is reducing energy use at UMD important?
UMD emits 5.5 metric tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions each year for every student on campus. That's 33 pounds per student each day. To visualize how much this really is, think of it this way: for each UMD student, we emit enough CO2-equivalent emissions to fill two and a half 2-liter bottles every MINUTE.
How does the Energy Pledge work?

What else can I do?
To reduce energy use in other ways both on and off campus, consider these easy options:
· Use cold water whenever possible, especially when doing laundry
· Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes
· Print on both sides of the paper
· Use reusable bags and water bottles
· Reduce fuel use in your vehicle by driving sensibly, keeping your tires properly inflated, and combining errands
